Turista has been a result-oriented girl from a young age, and she clearly knew what she wanted to achieve in life. The Indianapolis-born, Houston-based entrepreneur shares many notable career accomplishments that she believes have helped her business acumen significantly.
Turista established her first business, Smarty Pants DayCare, at 20 with her cousin Jasmine Hampton. Smarty Pants DayCare was their dream, but instead of them going small and starting an at-home daycare, they chose to open a center. The center reached 100 children enrolled within the first year, which is a huge accomplishment for a daycare.
The success of Smarty Pants DayCare pushed her to look further into the business world, and that’s when she established a body sculpting business in a two-room suite.
“I really wanted a med spa that I could do multiple spa services in, but before I could get my investors on board with this idea, I had to prove myself. So, I interned at a med spa for 6 months. Then, finally, I closed the space for my body studio during the pandemic and did a total gut rehab and build in my own space – also during the pandemic,” says Turista.
Today, Turista takes pride in 1 Body Med Spa as the first African American female-owned med spa in Houston, TX, and a top facility that’s impacting lives.
The biggest challenge she has faced as an entrepreneur was getting through the pandemic. At the daycare, Turista and Jasmine lost an employee to COVID, and that really hit home for us and made us realize how serious Covid was. Because of this, it made us stop accepting kids or letting ones with symptoms come in which resulted in child dis-enrollment. This was the same case at her body studio, where she lost clients, so revenue and morale were way down. But despite the hardships, Turista was able to dig deep and look for other lucrative and recession-proof opportunities, which is why she pursued and obtained her real estate license and they purchased a few trucks to diversify the business portfolio.
According to Turista, your life is all about the everyday choices you make. People might offer their advice, but they cannot tell you what’s best for you or your body. She believes that only you know what’s best for you because you have your innermost self and spirit that lets you know. Never allow someone else’s opinion of you to affect how you see yourself. Self-confidence and self-belief are all you need, so never give up on yourself and what you want. Challenges might derail your journey, but they can never completely block your path unless you allow them.
An ambitious businesswoman, Turista envisions a bright future ahead with more prosperity for her businesses. She aspires to scale 1 Body Med Spa into a franchise opportunity across major US cities. This has been her biggest dream, and she is currently working hard to see her dreams come to life.
